Age: 13

Background Information: Wiki

Personality:
Mei is a confident (bragging about her A+s), perky (constantly smiling and cheerful), quirky ("And if I want to do a cartwheel, I will!") preteen who unknowingly leads a double life - the person she's with among her friends and the person she's with when with her mother. When around her group of best friends, Mei is more like her real self - she enjoys singing and dancing to boy bands, fawning over hot boys, and expresses herself freely. But when Mei is around her mother, she has to keep the things she likes a secret. She doesn't see this as a bad thing, merely that her mother has different expectations for her and there's no harm in not telling her mother things that would disappoint her. But this comes at a price - repressing a lot of her negative emotions, and at times being forced to spend less time with her friends in order to keep up with her mother's strict regiment.

While Mei normally has little trouble sticking up for herself and for others, such as when she's bullied by Tyler or (in promotional material) protesting for the environment, she finds it extremely difficult to oppose her mother, even when her mother is not around. When offered the choice to go karaoke with her friends or cleaning the shrine as she does every single day, she chooses the latter, even though she clearly wants to go to the former. She tries very hard to please those around her, often at the cost of her own happiness or safety - an example being when she knows too much Panda transformations could result in it staying with her forever, but when she realizes not turning into the Panda will cost her friends the opportunity to see 4Town, she poofs into action.

This isn't to say Mei doesn't love her mother - Mei loves her with all her heart, even when she's being incredibly smothering and embarrassing, as she knows her mother is doing it out of love. Unfortunately this is root cause of why she doesn't stop her mother's harmful behavior, as she's afraid doing so will cost her mother's love. So Mei convinces herself she also loves all the things her mother forces on her, and it's only when the Panda enters her life that she finds the will to step outside of her mother's circle and think about what she wants and who she really wants to be.

As for The Panda, at the canon point I'm taking her from, Mei has conflicting feelings about it. She's terrified of the damage she causes in that form, as well as having convinced herself that others will fear and hate her for it. Since she can't control it, she develops a rather deep self-loathing that sees herself as a failure and a disappointment to her parents. However, her friends openly accept (and even adore!) the Panda, doing their best to assure her that they'll always love her no matter what. As a result, Mei discovers that when she feels her emotions getting out of control, thinking of her best friends will calm her down. It's telling that it's her friends are the ones who can calm her, and not her own mother. On a level Mei doesn't want to acknowledge, she knows her mother has a limit where she could stop accepting her daughter. Also, just because her friends accepted her doesn't mean the whole world will... but on that point, she's not 100% sure. Her whole world's been rocked.

So, what is the Current Mei like? She knows she's smart and talented, and if she focuses on those points, she's sure everything will be fine. But she's still afraid of releasing The Panda, and will do whatever she can to hide it. But now that she knows mom isn't always right nor will she always be there for Mei, she's unsure of how to move forward. She's scared of the future, but not enough that she can't make the first step forward. She wants a life, her own life, but is taking baby steps towards it.

... she's also a tiny bit boy-crazy. But I'm sure in a game where the cast is 95% bishōnen, that won't be an issue...

Abilities & Inventory:
Abilities:
Her ability to turn parts of her/her entire self into a giant Red Panda, which comes with Super Strength. This is powered by strong emotions, both positive and negative.

Inventory:
A backpack containing the following supplies - her flute case (with flute), 4Town magazine, and a CD Player with the 4Town Australian Tour on it.

Suitability & Plans:
This is my first time playing Mei, so it's a mixture of nervousness and excitement. I think having her being "forced" to make friends outside of her school environment will be good for her and interesting, as well as discovering here instead of the Locker Scene that other people will accept the Panda. Since this is an entire game where Emotions are Power, someone who is struggling to repress parts of herself should make some unique repercussions and development.

Also, this will have been the longest she's ever been away from her family, so that's definitely going to have a toll on her, and as she learns from outside sources that what Mom has been ingraining in her isn't... great. For example, she'll definitely freak out over being unable to study and her grades dropping despite being told (SEVERAL TIMES) that won't be an issue. So overall, the plan is for her to develop new friendships and realize she has nothing to be ashamed of. It'll take a while for the latter to stick, but what's a good game without any drama?

Questions: how long can I get away with the "its gunna be mei" gag before I get kicked out of the game
